We qualified 27th, and as Mikes sister and spotter Denise Harmon-Mixon said, “we out qualified Kurt Bush!! Now we’re praying for a good race.” Mike had to start from the back due to missing the drivers meeting. We ran really well, worked our way up to 8th early on, just to see how long it would take to push the car forward. Mike even led a lap, it was under a caution, but hey, it still counts. Mike dropped back to hang out and avoid trouble.
Mike did go 2 laps down due to speeding penalties, but did make those laps up.
The race came down to a G-W-C and we didn’t think we could make up more than a couple spots. We were in 17th place and made the decision to take what we had and protect our equipment. Mike said he “felt like it wasn’t over yet, the big one hasn’t happened yet.” Dave Fuge, Mikes Crew Chief, trusts his drivers intuition and experience. Turned out to be the best decision as Mike missed the crash on the last lap. We are happy with our 17th place finish in the first race of the season.
All of us here at MHR send thoughts and prayers to the fans injured at Daytona. May the Lord Always watch over all of us.
